What NHS Dental Care Covers
NHS dental treatment covers all the clinically necessary dental care you need to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums healthy.
This includes:
Regular check-ups and dental examinations
X-rays
Fillings and crowns
Root canal treatment
Dentures and bridges
Extractions
Preventive advice to help maintain good oral health
Cosmetic treatments — such as tooth whitening or veneers for aesthetic reasons — are not available under the NHS, but we offer affordable private options for those who wish to enhance their smile further.
Free NHS Dental Care: Who Is Eligible?
Around 40% of NHS dental patients are exempt from paying any contribution towards their treatment.
You may qualify if you are:
Under 26 years old
Pregnant or have given birth within the last 12 months
In possession of a valid exemption certificate due to low income or certain benefits
If you are exempt from NHS charges, please let your dentist know and bring proof of exemption to your appointment.
NHS Check-Ups and Ongoing Care
All NHS patients are entitled to a free dental examination. During your check-up, your dentist will:
Examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues
Check for signs of decay, cavities, or gum disease
Screen for early signs of oral cancer
Provide personalised oral hygiene advice
If further treatment is required, your dentist will discuss all the available options with you — explaining the benefits, limitations, and costs. Once you agree on a treatment plan, you’ll receive an estimate outlining the associated costs.
